EarthCache - Idaho Falls Area

EarthCaching is a recreational activity leads you to some of southeastern Idaho's significant geological resources. Using your own Global Positioning System (GPS) unit and a set of clues obtained below, you can learn a little more about our region's geological past.

Students from Skyline High School, under the direction of teachers K.C. Jones and Madelaine Love, have placed geocaches at the following locations.

Short Description of the EarthCache: Dirt Road to site, easy to get to, along the riverside, lookout point.
Educational Information about the Earth Cache: The snake river as it flows past th island is a mature to old river valley. It is curvaceous and calm. There are lava rocks in the area and there are trees providing nice shade.
Technical Information: There's farming land near by.
Hints: Look by the commemorative inscription, there is a present in the bush next to it!
Questions:  Would you expect to find natural levees in old young or mature river valleys?

Educational Information about the Earth Cache: Menan butte is one of the best preserved MAR buttes, it erupted through water also.
Technical Information:  
Hints: Hike off trail to a rock formation. Small climb up the cliff in a hole to the right of the middle.
Questions:  What is a xenolith. A xenolith is foreign rock like cobble, pebbles, and sand grains from a riverbed that the volcano erupted through like the riverbed.

Educational Information about the Earth Cache: A wildlife refuge preserved in 1956 to maintain the wetlands area home to many waterfowl and shorebirds.
Technical Information: There are many dirt roads breaking off the main road going into the marsh. from there you can see many nesting boxes and birds on the water.
Hints: look to the left and right and you will find many large nests made of sticks.
